Subscription Update Obituary

Leo J. Amoruso, 97 of Charlton formerly of Worcester, passed away peacefully in the loving care of The Overlook Masonic Health Center on Wednesday, December 14, 2022.

Leo was born on December 6, 1925 in Shrewsbury, a son of the late Giuseppe and Mary (DiBenedetto) Amoruso.  He graduated from Rogers High School in Newport, RI, Class of 1944.  In August of 1944, Leo was drafted for WWII by the United States Army and served in the European Theater Operations with the 83rd infantry and after combat with the 796th Military Battalion in Vienna, Austria. Upon his return from active duty, Leo earned his certification from the New England School of Photography.

Leo worked as a photographer for the Massachusetts Department of Public Works in the photography department in Boston.  After many years in Boston, Leo transferred to the MADPW engineering department in Worcester, retiring in 1987.  He previously worked for Marvin Richmond Photography and was the owner of Davis Photo Studio both in Worcester.

Leo was a member of Massachusetts Professional Photographers, the Columbus Civic Association, the American Legion Post 201, Green Hill Golf Course, and the Wachusett Country Club.  He was an avid fisherman and golfer.  He enjoyed family gatherings, bowling, and spending winters with his many friends in Boynton Beach, Florida.

Leo’s beloved wife of 62 years, Eleanor J. “Ellie” (Newcomb) Amoruso passed away on September 13, 2018.  He is survived by two sons, Joseph L. Amoruso of North Carolina, and Thomas R. Amoruso and his wife Jill Johnson of Colorado Springs, CO; a daughter, Sharon L. Dahrooge and her husband Ken of Charlton; five grandchildren, Andrew Dahrooge, Lauryn Breen and her husband Richard, Jillian Dahrooge, Nina Cruzado and her husband Gabriel and Anthony Amoruso; two greatgrandchildren, Isaiah Cruzado and Eleanor Breen; a sister, Nancy Thomas and her husband J. Anthony of Shrewsbury; many nieces and nephews.  Leo is predeceased by two sisters, Rose Langley and Marie Beachy.

Leo’s family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all the staff at The Overlook Masonic Health Center for the outstanding care and compassion Leo received during his time with them.

Relatives and friends are invited to a period of calling hours on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 from 9-11 am with his funeral service at 11:00 am in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester.  A burial with his wife will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Leo’s name can be made to: The Overlook Masonic Health Center, Attn: Business Office, 88 Masonic Home Rd., Charlton, MA. 01507
