John Patrick Fleming, known to most as Pat, 94 years old, of Worcester, Massachusetts and Siesta Key, Florida died Saturday, March 28, 2020 at his home on Siesta Key from injuries sustained from a fall. His wife of 66 years was by his side. Due to COVID-19, it was his wife’s wish to delay services until she could return to their Worcester home. Pat was born in Worcester on July 13, 1925, one of seven children born to Margaret (Twoomey) Fleming and Timothy Michael Fleming, both Irish immigrants from County Kerry, Ireland. He was predeceased by his parents and his six siblings. He left his wife Phyllis (Joudrey) Fleming of Worcester and Siesta Key, his son, Timothy Patrick Fleming and his wife Heather (Stober), and his one grandchild, Patrick Timothy all of Fairhaven, MA.

Pat entered the Navy in 1943 at the age of 18 in Newport, RI. After completing Signal School, he was part of the original crew aboard the USS Mt. McKinley. While at sea for almost a full year, the McKinley and crew were instrumental in the capture and occupation of Palau, Leyte, Luzon and Okinawa Islands. During the next twenty years, Pat was assigned to the USS Brownson, USS Hyman, USS Yosemite and USS Sullivans. As part of the crew aboard the USS Sullivans he participated in the Cuban Blockade of 1961 and the search for the USS Thresher in 1963. He had achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer upon his retirement from the Navy aboard the USS Sullivans in 1964. Pat spent the next twenty years working for Charles Gilman & Sons as a wine, beer and liquor salesman servicing the Worcester area. Known as the “big guy with the bow tie,” he was well respected and in later years loved to talk shop with his son and daughter-in-law who followed similar career paths. After retiring in 1987, Pat proceeded to enjoy the next 33 years with his wife, splitting time between Siesta Key, Worcester and Fairhaven, MA. Pat was a family man. He was happily married and a dedicated husband to “his bride” Phyllis for 66 years, loved being a father to Tim and grandfather to Patrick. One of his favorite roles came in the past twelve years of his life when he became a grandfather to Patrick. Pat enjoyed cooking, woodworking, going for walks, playing golf, storytelling, and loved to spend time with his family, especially his son and grandson. In previous years, he was known to walk his son’s dogs through drive up windows and spoil them with cheeseburgers. He was proud of his Irish heritage and loved to sing Irish songs. He was a lifetime member of the Fleet Reserve Association and the Disabled American Veterans. Pat was the best of men, part of the greatest generation and is greatly missed. In lieu of flowers please make donations to disabled American Veterans www.dav.org All services will be private.
