HOLL Wallace Francis, of 1816 Bimini Rd, Lexington, died Sep 6, 2011 at Central Baptist Hospital after a brief illness. Wallace was born in Cleveland OH, Aug 21, 1924, to Verna Osterland and Francis Holl, the eldest of three sons. He is survived by his brother, Ralph, and preceded in death by his brother, Ken. Growing up in the Great Depression, Wally went to work and shouldered responsibility at a young age. He enlisted in the Army in 1944, shipped out to England and participated in the landing at Normandy. After the war, he made his way from Cleveland through a January blizzard to Worchester, MA, to marry Winifred Irene Holl, a war nurse and sturdy New Englander. They made their first home in Elyria OH, where Winnie raised their two children, Gayle and Rusty, while Wally drove freight locomotives for the New York Central along the industrial corridor of Lake Erie. In 1959, hoping for work with less grueling hours, Wally took the Civil Service Exam and qualified for a job with the Interstate Commerce Commission. He held posts in Louisville, Washington, and Philadelphia, and for thirty years arrived early and left late as a civil servant. After retirement he continued to work into his late seventies as a legal consultant for railroad safety. In recent years, he learned to cook, keep house and do laundry to give his bride a rest. He is survived by his wife Winnie, his children, Russell and Gayle, and his grandchildren, Alex, Clare, Donna, and Joey. He taught them by example values deep in the American grain: thrift, modesty, and competence. Their well being is a testimony to his love and good work. His family would like to thank Central Baptist nursing staff of the fourth floor ICU and fifth floor palliative care for their caring professionalism. They are also forever grateful to all Wally and Winnie’s friends at the Lansdowne Rite Aid pharmacy, Nicholasville Rd, Denny’s, and Richmond Road Bob Evans who embraced them as family. They also wish to thank all his neighbors and friends who slowed their pace to walk that last part of a mile with him.
