Shirley was born in Worcester on July 13, 1924, the daughter of the late Julius and Evelyn (Landry) Lane, and she lived in Worcester all her life. She graduated from Commerce High School in 1941. During WWII, she worked at The David Clark Co., making bomb parachutes.
