Subscription Update Obituary

Robert P. Masterson, Sr., 98, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2024 in Holden Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He leaves his sons and daughters- Robert Masterson, Jr. of Worcester, Christine Bristol of North Brookfield, William Masterson and his wife Diana of Worcester, James Masterson and his wife Barbara of Shrewsbury, Barbara Scotia and her husband Kirk of Charlton, Kathleen Wolfe and her husband David of Worcester, and Jean Martin and her companion Joseph DiTullio of Sterling; 15 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; a son-in-law Robert Dell’Olio; many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grand nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of over 50 years Doris E. (Gough) Masterson, a daughter Ann Dell’Olio, a son-in-law Ernest “Chuckie” Martin; and by siblings Helen Duhart, Alice Lemieux, and Richard Masterson.

Robert was born in Taunton, son of the late Henry and Matilda (Benasky) Masterson. He graduated from St. Peter’s High School, proudly served his country in the US Army as a Staff Sergeant in the European Theater during WWII, and worked as a clerk for the Worcester Post Office for many years. He also had worked at Crompton Knowles and Wyman Gordon. He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Church and enjoyed traveling to England, Ireland, Las Vegas, and Old Orchard Beach. He especially liked horseracing.

In Bob’s younger years, he was a member of the All City Baseball and Basketball teams and was inducted into the Hall of Fame at St. Peter’s High School. He was an exceptional athlete and was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers. He also played for the MA Champion Worcester Hawks fast pitch softball team, the Pamco New England Professional Basketball League, and was an umpire in the Tris Speaker Little League for many years.

The family would like to thank the staff of Holden Rehabilitation for their compassionate care of Bob.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 from 4-7 p.m. in Nordgren Memorial Chapel 300 Lincoln St. Worcester, MA 01605. A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at 12 noon in St. Joan of Arc Church 570 Lincoln St. Worcester. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton.
