Another of the greatest generation has left us to sail calmer seas, enjoy brighter horizons and to be with his beloved wife, Patricia who passed away last year after nearly 70 years of marriage. Robert “Bob” McHugh, Sr. died peacefully at Rose Monahan Hospice House on Saturday, May 27, 2017. A fitting day for an incredibly patriotic man.

Born and raised in Wolfeboro, NH, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy prior to his 16 birthday after Pearl Harbor along with his two brothers. Bob was a survivor of the Murmansk Run, an incredible voyage during WWII that was under constant siege, a battle known to have helped win WWII. He was stationed as gunner on the Merchant Marine ship the Nathan Alexander. He met his beloved wife Patricia in Chicago, Illinois while stationed for training at the Great Lakes Naval Station. After serving his country Bob and Pat married and settled in the North End of Worcester where they raised four loving children. Bob worked at Wyman-Gordon in Worcester for 38 years never missing a day and earning numerous awards for his creativity and innovations at the plant. He had an amazing sense of humor, was extremely generous helping anyone in need, he could create and fix anything, was an avid Nascar, Red Sox, Patriots, WWE and Family Feud fan. Bob loved God, his family, his friends and “toothpicks” the most.

Bob is survived by his adoring children; Linda M. and her husband Tom Keene, Edward G. McHugh, Patty McHugh with whom he lived, her fiancé Tim Perpall and Maryann Fitzsimmons, Bob’s adopted daughter. His grandchildren, who meant the world to him, Robert J. McHugh, III & his wife Lisa; Kathleen T. Gaudette and her partner Darryl Henry, Michael McHugh, Megan DeMalia & her husband John, Kathryn Murphy and her fiancé Bethany Paquin, Mark R. Brown, Mackenzie McHugh and four beautiful great-grandchildren who brought him much joy; Emily, Joey, Benjamin and Colt DeMalia and Heather and Aileen Henry. He also leaves his God-daughter Kathy Gleason and many nieces, nephews and friends whom he cherished and whom cherished him. Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife Patricia, his parents Catherine & Arthur, brothers John and Arthur, his son Robert J. McHugh, Jr. and grand-daughter Emily Murphy.

Calling hours will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster Street, Worcester, the funeral Mass will be immediately following at 11:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 353 Grove Street, Fr. Riley will officiate. Burial will be after Mass at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to VNACare Hospice, 120 Thomas Street Worcester, MA 01608. Bob’s family would like to extend a blessed thank you to the entire Worcester VNACare Hospice Team for all the love and support provided to Bob and his family during his journey home, he loved each of you, especially his “doc”. We’d also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to his aide Lynnette, we were blessed to have you.

“To live in the hearts of those who love you is never to die” You will live on, and until we meet again Dad, may God hold you in the palm of His hand… we will miss you, thank you for your love.
