Subscription Update Obituary

   James C. McGrath, 83, formerly of Worcester, died Thursday, March 19, 2009 at the home of his son, Mickey McGrath and Marie Wilmot in West Brookfield.

   In addition to his son, he leaves a daughter, Paula McCartney of Worcester; two granddaughters, Jennifer Capone and her husband Mathew Capone of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Megan McGrath; his former daughter-in-law, Beverly McGrath, both of Worcester; two sisters, Shirley Denoncourt and her husband Robert of Templeton, and many nieces and nephews. His sister, Dorothy Contois and his brother, Thomas McGrath predeceased him.

   Jim was born in Worcester, son of Harold and Wilhelmina (Peterson) McGrath. He left St. Peter's High School to enlist in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a Navy signalman and his ship was involved in the liberation of the Philippines.

   He was a plumber for more than 30 years before retiring.

   He was a member of the Northborough American Legion and the Northborough Fish & Game Club.

   He participated in sports throughout his life, including many years in Worcester adult fast-pitch softball leagues. He was also a diehard Boston Red Sox fan.

   Jim was also a gifted artist and did drawings, paintings and wood carvings.

   Calling hours at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester, are Monday, March 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be Tuesday, March 24 from the funeral home with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in St. Christopher's Church, 950 West Boylston St., Worcester. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.

   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the James C. McGrath Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the Assumption School, 17 Grove St., Millbury 01527.
