Geza T. Szalay, 75, passed away peacefully Saturday April 27, 2013 at UMASS Medical Center.
Geza was married to Judith (Warren) Szalay for 45 years before her death in July of 2012. He is survived by his two sons, Glenn Szalay and his wife Lori and their children, A1C Zachary Szalay of Aviano AB, Italy, Matthew and Cameron of Auburn; and his son Gregg Szalay of Charlton. He is also survived by his 2 sisters, Olga Szabo of Debrecen, Hungary and Iren Szalay of Gyor, Hungary; nieces and nephew of Hungary and Austria.
Geza emigrated from Hungary to the United States in 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution before getting drafted into the United States Army in 1962. He worked at the Worcester State Hospital for over 30 years before taking early retirement.
“Papa” by which his grandchildren knew him as, enjoyed working in his yard, spending time with his grandchildren, golfing and trips to Foxwoods with his wife. He was an avid sports fan who loved to debate Boston sports as well as politics. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with beloved “Reesey”. He was very proud of his Hungarian heritage and equally as proud to be a citizen of the United States to which he would refer to as “the greatest country in the world”.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Geza’s family on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 from 4-6 PM in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central Street, Auburn. A service of remembrance will be held at 6 PM. Burial will be at a later date in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
