Worcester Sunday Telegram May 12th, 1974

Nichols College basketball star Gary M. McNulty, 22, of 84 Bluebell Road, Worcester, was killed about 12.29 a.m. yesterday when his car collided with a tractor-trailer truck on Route 12.
He was the son of Charles McNulty, baseball coach at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Police listed Joseph Tetreault of Chaplin, Conn.,as driver of the Holmes Transportation Co. truck. He was not injured, according to police. Dr. Norman E. Brodeur, medical examiner in Webster, pronounced Mr. McNulty dead at the scene. He said death was due to head, chest and multiple body injuries.
The accident occurred near the Krintzman Dustings Mills Co. Tetreault was headed south and Mr. McNulty north on Rt.12 when the accident occurred. Local police and Registry of Motor Vehicles investigated.
Mr. McNulty, a business management major, was due to graduate from Nichols College on June 1. At todays Senior Class Day exercises, Mr. McNulty was to have received the William F.Heller Memorial Award as the Bisons outstanding basketball player. It would have been the second year that he had received the award.
Mr. McNulty was the second highest scorer in Nichols College basketball history. During his four years there, he scored 1.384 points, averaging 17.7 points per game. He was team captain the last two years and started all 80 games played by the Bisons the last four years.
The left-handed forward guard was twice selected Nichols “Most Valuable Basketball Player” by the Worcester Coaches, Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
He was also a sports star at St John’s High School in Shrewsbury, where he graduated in 1970. He was co-captain of the basketball team which won the District III Championship in 1969-1970. He also played end on the St John’s football team, and in 1969 was named most valuable player in the St John’s-St.Peter’s traditional Thanksgiving Day Game. He was awarded the Francis A. Corsac Memorial Award and the Robert R. Hazelhurst Memorial Trophy for his efforts in that game.
He leaves two brothers, Charles R (Chip) McNulty Jr. and Kevin S. McNulty, a sister, Miss Joanne McNulty, all of Worcester, and two nieces.
He was born in Worcester Feb.8th 1952, son of Charles R. and Marianne C (McQuade) McNulty
of Worcester.
The funeral will be Tuesday from Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Christopher’s Church. 950 West Boylston Steet. The Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling Hours at the funeral home are 7 to 9 tonight and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.

Since Gary’s death in 1974, The Gary McNulty Award is given each year at St John’s High School in Shrewsbury MA, for an oustanding multi-sport althlete who exhibits the characteristics demonstrated by Gary McNulty: sacrafice, courage, perseverance, love of the game, positive commitment for the good of the whole team. Gary graduated from St. John’s in 1970.
Nichols College also awards The Gary McNulty Award for Outstanding Male Freshman Athlete each year. Gary was to have graduated on June 1,1974. His death came just a few weeks before.
