Subscription Update Obituary

   Elmer G. Hurd, 90, of Mayflower Circle, died Wednesday, October 15, 2008, in Holden Nursing Home, after an illness.

   His wife of 56 years, Dorothy E. (Wyatt) Hurd, died in 2002. He leaves two daughters, Susan E. St. John of North Brookfield, and Linda M. Monroe of Sidney, Ohio. He was born in Marlboro the son of Elmer W. and Eleanor (Gardner) Hurd and lived 61 years in Holden.

   Mr. Hurd was a U.S. Army Air Force Veteran of World War II serving in the 30th Photographers Reconnaissance Squadron in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre. He worked in research and development for the Norton Company in Worcester for 34 years before retiring in 1982. He was the Commander of the John E. Harkins American Legion Post 42 in Holden, a longtime member of the Rufus Putnam Lodge of Masons in Rutland, the Scottish Rite Bodies of Worcester, the Holden Senior Center, and La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux, 40/8. He loved golfing, reading and was an avid stamp collector. For 60 years Elmer decorated Veterans' graves for Memorial Day.

   Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, October 17th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. The graveside service for Elmer will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21st at Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Ave., Paxton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
