Elizabeth (Hillhouse) Pendleton, 69, passed away peacefully August 28, 2014, after a bravely fought battle with cancer and muscle myopathy.

Elizabeth was born March 6, 1945 in Worcester, the daughter of Shirley (Johnson) and James W. Hillhouse III. She was an honor graduate of Wachusett Regional High School and pursued the scholarly disciplines of secondary education and psychology. She earned her B.S. from Clark University, Worcester and her M.S. in Guidance and Counseling from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA.

She deeply treasured her time as a guidance counselor at Maury High School and was honored to be a part of her students’ and colleagues’ journeys. She loved reading, traveling and staying connected with loved ones.

She married her best friend and the love of her life, Dr. Jesse Pendleton and they shared the past 47 years together in Virginia Beach. Cherishing her memories are her two daughters, Beth and her husband, Paul Westefer and Jessica and her husband, Andrew Parks; her brother, David Hillhouse and his wife, Renate; her brother-in-law, Don Johnson; her nephew, Erik Hillhouse and his wife, Tracy; three grandchildren, Naya and Divia Parks and Jackson Westefer; and grandniece, Adelaide Hillhouse. She is predeceased by her sister, Nancy Johnson as well as her parents.

She leaves a legacy of volunteerism, love of family and friends and most of all just being neighborly. She will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, generosity, wonderful sense of humor, her infectious smile, her eternal optimism and everlasting joy. She will be missed by countless friends and family.

The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff and care team at Virginia Oncology Center, Sentara Virginia Beach General, Sentara Rosemont and Sentara Norfolk General.

A private committal service will be held on Monday, September 8, at Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cancer Care Foundation of Tidewater, P.O. Box 12693, Norfolk, VA 23541 or Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. 434 West 33rd St., NY, NY 10001 or any cancer organization of your choice. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden is assisting the family with local arrangements.
