Shortly after beginning his career, Donald met his loving wife Isabell (Moss) in 1956. The couple shared 63 years together in Holden before Isabell passed in 2019.

Donald was known for a pristine yard. On the weekends, you could find him outside doing yardwork and enjoying the outdoors. He competed in a softball league with his team the Silver sneakers, with whom he was featured in the newspaper. Additionally, he was featured again in the newspaper for winning a horseshoe competition. When the weather did not cooperate Donald could be found playing a computer game.
