Athol and its community mourn the loss of Deborah Lee Johnson, a beloved resident who passed away on Wednesday, June 28th, 2023, at the age of 69. Deborah’s departure has left a void in the lives of those who knew her, but her memory will forever be cherished and celebrated. She was surrounded by her loving family as she peacefully left this world and embarked on her final journey.

Deborah was born on May 11th, 1954, in Lynn, Massachusetts, to the late Richard N. and Virginia A. (Palmer) Durkee. She grew up in Stoneham Massachusetts, where she developed strong ties to her community and formed lifelong friendships. Deborah graduated from Stoneham High School in 1972 and went on to get a degree as a Medical Assistant in 2011 from Kaplan University. She worked at various jobs over the years including Home Depot as a cashier, a bookkeeper for CH Powell, and as a Veterinarian’s Assistant. Debbie was most proud of being a home health aide where she helped people who she cared about deeply and eventually became her friends. Deborah was a woman of many talents and passions, and her warmth and kindness touched the hearts of everyone she encountered.

Deborah had an immense passion for crafts, and her creativity knew no bounds. She could often be found in her cozy little workshop, where she would spend hours meticulously crafting beautiful works of art. Her attention to detail and dedication to her craft were truly remarkable. Deborah’s talent extended to various artistic mediums, including painting, sewing, and stained glass. She had a unique ability to learn new things and make it look easy while doing so.

Animals held a special place in Deborah’s heart, especially dogs. She had an unwavering affection for these loyal companions and worked as a veterinarian’s assistant for many years. Her time as a veterinarian’s assistant taught her a level of compassion that translated into everything she did in life. Deborah had an innate ability to connect with animals, providing them with love, care, and a much-needed voice.

Above all, Deborah cherished her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Her love knew no boundaries, and her warm and nurturing spirit touched the lives of all who knew her. Deborah always put her loved ones first and would go to great lengths to ensure their happiness and well-being. Deborah loved unconditionally and everyone who knew her felt it; an amazing quality that is rare in this world.

Spirituality played a significant role in Deborah’s life. She embraced her beliefs with great reverence, finding solace and guidance through her spiritual journey. Deborah’s faith was a source of strength and comfort, enabling her to face life’s challenges with grace and resilience. She found joy in connecting with others who shared her spiritual path and was known for her open heart and compassionate nature. Deborah’s spiritually guided her during her darkest hours to stay composed and peaceful knowing Jesus was waiting for her with open arms.

Deborah Lee Johnson leaves behind a legacy of love, creativity, and kindness. She will be deeply missed by her children, Justin and Paul; grandchildren, Madison and Chase; siblings, Laurie Stimson and Mark Durkee; and a wide circle of friends and extended family members.

Family and friends will gather at O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, Worcester on Thursday, July 6th, from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. with a graveside service following at 11:30 a.m. in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
Deborah’s memory will forever remain etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her love for family, friends, animals, crafts, and spirituality will continue to inspire others to live with passion, empathy, compassion, and creativity. As we bid farewell to Deborah, let us remember her with smiles and gratitude for the beautiful life she shared with us.
Deborah is now with the person whom she loved the most.
