Walter Eugene Madsen, Sr., 99, of Largo, Florida, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2025, at Bay Pines VA Hospital. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and proud veteran, Walter lived a full and blessed life and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Born on January 10, 1926, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada, Walter was the son of Albert and Kathryn (Baxter) Madsen. He was raised in Barre, Massachusetts, where he attended high school, and later lived in Worcester, Massachusetts before retiring to Florida.
In 1955, Walter married the love of his life, Lorraine Simpson, in Barre, Massachusetts. They shared 55 wonderful years of marriage until her passing in 2010. Together they raised three children and built a legacy of love, hard work, and dedication.
Walter proudly served in the United States Army during World War II, stationed in Europe from 1944 to 1945. He was honorably discharged after suffering severe frostbite, a lasting reminder of his courageous service. A staunch supporter of fellow veterans, Walter maintained strong ties with the military community and supported causes such as the National World War II Museum.
A highly respected heavy equipment operator, Walter dedicated 40 years to his craft and was a 70-year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), Local 4, in Medway, Massachusetts. His work ethic, skill, and character left a lasting impression on all who worked alongside him.
Walter was known as a kind and humble gentleman, deeply loved by his family, friends, and neighbors. His warmth and integrity touched many lives.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Lorraine Simpson Madsen; and two sons, Walter Eugene Madsen, Jr. and Steven Allen Madsen. He is survived by his children: Alpha Madsen (Gayle Senter) of Plymouth, MA; Paul Madsen of Northfield, MA; and Cheryl Madsen Smith (Don Smith) of Plymouth, MA. Walter also leaves behind seven grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy and pride.
A memorial service in Massachusetts will be held at a later date to celebrate Walter’s remarkable life.
