Subscription Update Obituary

  Sumner D. Putnam, 88, of 16 E. Howe Village, a World War II veteran and retired pattern maker, died Thursday, Dec. 6, in the Meadows of Leicester.
 
His wife, Priscilla (Moore) Putnam, died in 1991. He leaves a daughter, Susan J. Watson of Spencer; two nephews and a niece; three grandchildren. He was born in Spencer, son of Walter and Harriet (Harrison) Putnam, and graduated from David Prouty High School in 1932, where he captained the basketball team. He also graduated from Worcester Boys Trade High School. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
 
Mr. Putnam was a pattern maker 40 years for Crompton & Knowles of Worcester, retiring in 1979. He was a call firefighter in Spencer for 39 years, and was secretary of the Firemen's Relief Association. Sumner was a member of Congregational Church in Spencer, a member of its men's bowling league and Men's Fellowship. He enjoyed carpentry and fishing.
 
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10, in Congregational Church, 205 Main St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, in Pillsbury Funeral Home, 163 Main St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Spencer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 147, Spencer, MA 01562.
