Subscription Update Obituary

     Sarah Ruth (Stark) Bakstran, 92, Born October 16, 1920 in Green Forest, Arkansas to Chris and Maude (Younger) Stark, passed away Wednesday, October 17, 2012. The family later moved to El Dorado, Kansas where Sarah attended school and then graduated from El Dorado Junior College in 1939. She taught school in one-room Butler County schools until March, 1942 when she became a federal civil service employee with the War Department in Washington, DC.

     She met Warren Bakstran, an enlisted Marine, at Quantico, VA. He was then transferred to Camp Pendleton, CA. Soon after his transfer to Camp Pendleton, CA with the 4th Marine Division, she followed and they were eventually married May 29, 1943 in San Diego.

     Sarah (Ruth to friends) spent 30 years in federal civil service in DC, Wichita, San Diego, Camp Pendleton, Rutland Heights, MA, Providence, RI, Bedford, MA and gave her best to the War Department, Navy Department, VA and the Air Force as an accountant/technician. She retired in July 1974 and moved back to San Diego where she worked with the Orange County Probation Department and then with City of San Diego Police Academy at Miramar College. She also volunteered at the Mira Mesa branch of the City Library. In 1989 the couple moved to Palm Harbor, FL and in 2006 they moved in with their daughter, Donna Sue and her husband, William P. Martin, In Ocala, FL.

     Sarah’s husband Warren Bakstran died November 7, 2009. She is survived by her daughter, Donna and husband, William P. Martin of Ocala, FL; a brother, Chris Stark, Jr and wife Wanda of Bloomington, IN; grandsons Timothy W. P. Martin of North Brookfield, MA; Keith F. Martin and wife, Melissa, of Barre, MA, great grandchildren Kristen of Suffield, CT, Keith Jacob, Kacey and Kirby of Barre; a niece, Barbara and her husband, William Baldwin of Odessa, TX; nephews Donald Patterson of El Dorado, KS and Robert and his wife Sue of Ponca City, OK, grand and great grand nieces and nephews.

     Funeral Services and Burial in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton are private.
