Richard Chester Valentine “Chet” of Worcester, age 82, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Monday, September 16, 2013 as a consequence of his long ordeal with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born December 18, 1930, he was preceded in death by his parents, George and Myrtis (Person) Valentine, and his brother Russell.
A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Chet is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Mary Jane (Riik); his four loving sons, James and his wife Mary of Chanhassen, MN; Robert and his wife Cathy of Holden; John and his wife Marina of Holden; and Thomas and his wife Nicole of Paxton; and 13 grandchildren, Annemarie, Katherine, Maria, Matthew, John and Cecelia, Sarah and Amy, Alyssa, Alexa and Olivia, Patrick and Kevin. He also leaves his sister-in-law Ann Valentine in Houston, TX and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Chet was born and raised in Worcester, a graduate of St. John’s High School and received a B.A. in business management at Clark University. He proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean War, where he was stationed in Germany. He spent most of his management career working in the wire industry in Worcester, spending more than 25 years at National Standard Corporation, followed by several years at Concord Wire Company before retiring in 1996.
He was a proud member of Main South American Legion Post 341 and the Diner’s Club. In addition, Chet enjoyed playing golf and was a longtime member of Hillcrest Golf Club where he enjoyed spending time with many lifelong friends.
He was a sports enthusiast and coached many of his sons sports teams over the years. Spending time with his grandchildren was something he enjoyed most. He will be remembered by all for his love, understanding, guidance, advice, patience and sense of humor. Sports discussions will never be the same without dad’s input.
The family would like to acknowledge the care Chet received at Worcester Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, where he spent the last three years of his life.
A celebration of Chet’s life will be held on Friday, September 20 from CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle Street, with a Mass at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main Street, where he was a longtime member. Visiting hours will be Thursday, September 19 from 5-8 PM at the funeral home.
