Richard Anthony “Red” Moynagh of Worcester, Massachusetts, died peacefully on the morning of May 30, 2014 in the Auburn Life Care Center. He was 86 and enjoyed a long, full life.
Red was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, boating, gardening, and all of nature enthralled him. He could identify any birdcall, feed squirrels from his hand, befriend a loyal partridge, and grow any vegetable or fruit (canning and dating them by the dozens). He was happy to share his bountiful crops with others.
For many years, he chopped his own wood and gathered his own spring water, making deliveries of these resources to family members and friends. He loved to host his extended family at his annual Labor Day Cookout. Richard was also an electrician and worked at Heald Machine for many years. He served in the Marine Corps for two years.
He was the sixth child of James and Lillian’s seven. He outlived and missed all his siblings: Dorothy Carlson, James Moynagh, Paul Moynagh, Kathleen Lyden, Virginia Finneran, and Lillian Peloquin. Born in North Brookfield, MA on a farm across from an apple orchard, he long loved the sweetness of a summer day and the crisp feel of early autumn. He and his childhood pal Oren Howard, of N. Brookfield, were great friends for eight decades.
Red raised four children with Esther Moynagh, his wife of 29 years. He also helped raise his nephew Andrew Fesuk who now resides in Atlanta. He leaves two daughters: Andrea Moynagh of Wrentham and Patricia Moynagh of New York City. He leaves one son Joseph Moynagh of Leicester. He lost his beloved son James Moynagh, of Worcester, in 2001.
He leaves his companion of many years Irene MacLeod, of Worcester. He also leaves three grandchildren: Trevor Moynagh-Cronin of New York City, Sara Moynagh of Worcester, and Shannon Moynagh of Leicester. In addition, he is survived by an extended family including many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, June 4th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster Street, Worcester. The funeral Mass will be Thursday, June 5 at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations, in Richard’s name, to the Mass Audubon Society: Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center and Wildlife Sanctuary, 414 Massasoit Road, Worcester, MA 01604 [508-753-6087].
