Nellie V. (Wetnicka) Barkoskie died May 18, 2010 at Quaboag On The Common Nursing Home following an extended illness. A resident of North Brookfield for most of her long life, Nellie formerly lived at 44 St. John Street.

She was born in Worcester to the late Joseph and Mary (Krugelska) Wetnicka and is predeceased by six siblings. A brother, John Wetnicka of West Brookfield, and a sister, Mary Wetnicka of Worcester, remain. Her former husband, Melvin ("Jim") T. Barkoskie predeceased Nellie in Gainesboro, FL in 1974.

Nellie is survived by her three children: James M. Barkoskie and his wife Laurie of Brimfield, Dale F. Barkoskie of North Brookfield, and Carole J. (Barkoskie) Nowicki and her husband Michael of Unicoi, TN. She was the devoted grandmother of Cotton, Summer, Nathan, Aerie, Aaron, Aven, and Sam and great grandmother of Jackson, Sofia, Lucas, Ellen, and Veronica. They are blessed to have had "Meem" in their lives.

Until declining health made it difficult, Nellie was very active in women's ministries at her church. Hers was a familiar face at the annual bazaar and on the bereavement committee. Hand made afghans and dolls, and Nell's chocolate cake with the "secret" frosting recipe were her trademarks. Nellie was also active at the North Brookfield Senior Center and enjoyed many special friendships there. Always generous with her time, talents and resources, Nellie will be remembered for her thoughtfulness, acts of kindness, and caring for the physical needs of so many others.

Once, in recent years, when asked how she would like to be remembered, Nellie told her daughter Carole that she hoped people would remember her for her apple pancakes. Those pancakes are near-legendary in the town of North Brookfield.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Monday, May 24, 2010 from 4-7 PM in Pillsbury Funeral Home, 44 Gilbert Street, North Brookfield. The funeral will be private for the family on Tuesday. Donations in Nellie's memory may be sent to Guardian Hospice of MA, 7 East Main Street, West Brookfield, MA 01585.
