Maybelle M. “May” Cone, 81, of Worcester, died August 29, 2012 in the Ichabod Washburn Hospice Residence after a long illness.
She leaves her brother, Robert A. Cone and his wife Ann Cone of Paxton; a sister, Elinore M. Manzaro of Worcester and several nieces and nephews.
Her three brothers, L. Winston Cone Jr., Clinton F. Cone and John W. Cone, her sister Gloria F. Manzara, and a special aunt Anne McCarthy, predeceased her.
She was born in Ware, daughter of Leon W. and Margaret M. (McCarthy) Cone and grew up in North Brookfield. She moved to Worcester in 1957.
Miss Cone graduated from North Brookfield High School and Hahnemann Hospital School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse.
She worked in the pediatric unit at Hahnemann Hospital for 40 years, retiring in 1993. Notably, she filled the overnight nursing shift for most of her career.
Upon her retirement, she was praised by a physician who worked with her for her calm efficiency, skilled professionalism, her humility and her true loving care for the children she helped.
Her vocation was part of her broader concern for the welfare of children. She was always available to watch over and attend to the children in her extended family. She loved knitting, especially items for the children she knew.
May loved to read. Most importantly, she loved spending time with family and friends.
The Cone family thanks the many caretakers and health professionals who looked after May in recent years, especially Rehab Kamau.
