Mary A. (Mara) Mamuska, 80, of Worcester, died Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at the UMass-Memorial Medical Center.
Her husband of 57 years, Richard J. Mamuska, died in 2007. She leaves six children, Susan A. wife of Richard P. Dupont of Spencer, Mary L., wife of Thomas E. Schwartz of Concord, N.H., David J., husband of Bridgit Mamuska of Hood River, Oregon, Julie A., wife of Roy Petsch of Mesa, Ariz., Sara J., wife of Delmer Morris of Indianapolis, and Beth M., wife of Paul Macrina of Norfolk; thirteen beloved grandchildren, Mark and Stephanie Dupont, Kevin McMahon, Meghan Martineau, Reed and Seth Mamuska, Jay and Jon-Tyler Petsch, Richard and Curtis Morris and Isabell, Garrett and Jacquelyn Macrina; two brothers, Thomas Mara and his wife Beverly of Grafton, James Mara and his wife Joyce of Sterling; two sisters-in-law, K. Helen Fleming and Catherine Mara, both of Worcester. Her infant son Richard died in 1955. Her brothers William and Michael Mara also predeceased her.
Mrs. Mamuska was born in Worcester, daughter of Edward and Mary (Duane) Mara and lived in Worcester all her life. She graduated from South High School in 1947.
Before raising her family, she worked in the offices of the Thom McAn Co. in Worcester. She later returned to work as a librarian, organizing the first library at the Wawecus Road School. The library was dedicated in her name. After Wawecus, she was a film librarian at the Alliance for Education, until her retirement.
She swam with the Nereids at the YWCA of Central Mass. She was a longtime volunteer with the Girl Scouts and helped organize their museum. She was a skilled and dedicated quilter. She was an avid sports fan, especially as a follower of the Boston pro teams.
Mary lived a full and active life. Just two weeks ago, she was swimming regularly and hitting golf balls.
Calling hours are Friday, May 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral will be Saturday, May 15 from the funeral home with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joan of Arc Church, 570 Lincoln St., Worcester. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
