Mrs. Margaret A. (Reid) Gowetz of 24 Valley Hill Drive, Worcester, Mass., died Sunday, July 11, 2010 in Notre Dame Long Term Care Centre.
She was born in West Advocate, Nova Scotia, the daughter of Herman and Edith (Spicer) Reid.
She was the wife of the late Ralph H. Gowetz who predeceased her in 1998.
She was predeceased by her 6 siblings: Pearle Wall of Worcester, Layton Reid of Paxton, Lorimer, Edmund, Burnell, and Estelle of Nova Scotia; and her niece, Meg Wall Sheldrick.
She is survived by her nephew, Edmund Reid and his wife Anne, of West Advocate, Nova Scotia. Edmund made his home with the Gowetz's while attending college in Massachusetts. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews in Nova Scotia, Canada.
She graduated from Mount Saint Vincent's Academy, Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1936 and from Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, in 1939. She completed an internship in Dietetics at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, in 1940.
Mrs. Gowetz was a very dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Worcester, serving on major boards and committees as well as being the Moderator of First Baptist Church from 1983 to 1986. She was a Trustee of Andover Newton Theological School in Newton.
She was active in community affairs, having served on the boards of Friendly House and the Ruth M. Trainor Neighborhood Centre, as well as the Visiting Nurses Association, Young Women's Christian Association, American Red Cross, United Way, Worcester County Music Guild and Music Association, National Managers Association, Massachusetts Restaurant Association, National Dietetic Association, one of the founders of the Massachusetts Educational Council of Food Services at the University of Massachusetts.
She had a very rewarding 35 year career firstly as Dietitian and later Director of Food Service at Paul Revere Life Insurance Company, retiring in 1982. During her career she received many awards and recognitions. In 1980, as a member of the evaluating team of the USAF Hennessy Trophy Program, she reviewed dietary processes at US bases around the world.
She was named in "Who's Who of American Women" 1981-82 edition.
The family would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to the entire staff of Notre Dame Long Term Centre for the loving supportive care she received during her stay there.
A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 15 in First Baptist Church, 111 Park Ave. Private burial will be in Worcester Co. Memorial Park. There are no calling hours. The family requests flowers be omitted. Donations may be made instead to First Baptist Church Memorial Fund or to Friendly House Inc., 36 Wall St., Worcester 01604. Caswell-King Funeral Home, 474 Grove St. is directing arrangements.
