Kenneth Schofield Sr., a longtime resident of Paxton, passed away from this world peacefully on July 17, 2018.

Ken was employed for over 30 years as an electronic technician for the FAA, keeping the regional Vortac radar system operating in all kinds of conditions, and keeping New England air traffic out of harm’s way. He served in WWII in the Coast Guard, and was a Massachusetts State Trooper before moving to Paxton.

Ken, whose radio handle was W1RIL, was an avid and renowned HAM radio operator, winning several world-wide DX contests in the late 60’s, and receiving multiple awards for his innovations in the Amateur Radio field.  He loved tinkering with anything electronic, so much so that his last words to family on Sunday night was a request to procure lubricating oil and 100 feet of twisted pair… copper wire. Ken had a great life and in his own mind, life was always wonderful.

Ken was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Hertha (Frowein) Schofield in 2013. He leaves two daughters, Crystal Bridgeo and her husband, Mark and Robin Cherry and her partner, Gene Dagle; a son, Ken Schofield and his wife, Cathi; a grandson, Jason Schofield; a granddaughter, Ryann Schofield; and great-grandchildren Arabella and Azariaha Hungerford.

A private service for the immediate family will be held at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. The family requests donations be made to the Overlook Hospice, 88 Masonic Home Road #2, Charlton, MA 01507 where Ken resided for the past few years or to the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Associaton, P.O. Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241-7005.
