John R. Hilton Jr., 64, of 51 Uncatena Ave. died Friday in The Medical Center of Central Massachusetts – Hahnemann.

He leaves his wife, Barbara V. (Johnson) Hilton; two sons, John R. Hilton III of Bayport, Long Island, N.Y., and State Trooper Joseph J. Hilton of East Brookfield; three daughters, Sandra M. Hilton and Wendy A. Frost, both of Worcester, and Cynthia J. Walker of Webster; his mother, Margaret I. Hilton of Worcester; six grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Mr. and Mrs. Hilton would have observed their 41st wedding anniversary Feb. 26. He was born in Worcester, son of John R. Hilton Sr., and lived here most of his life. He graduated from Boys' Trade High School in 1947.

Mr. Hilton was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 4th Infantry Division in the European-African-Middle Eastern theater. He saw action in the D-Day invasion of France. He received a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.

He was a stationary engineer for the state at Cushing Hospital in Framingham, where he worked for 28 years, retiring last year.

Mr. Hilton was a member of Franklin Lodge of Masons in Grafton and the Scottish Rite Bodies – including Goddard Council, Princes of Jerusalem; Lawrence Chapter of Rose Croix; Worcester Lodge of Perfection; and the Massachusetts Consistory in Boston. He was a member of the York Rite Bodies – including Worcester County Commandery, Knights Templar; Eureka Royal Arch Chapter; Hiram Council, Royal & Select Masters; and the Springfield Consistory. He was a member of the Aletheia Grotto Patrol, the New England Grotto Association, the Sword of Bunker Hill in Charlestown, Gaspee Order 99 in Rhode Island, Melha Temple Shrine in Springfield and the Hampshire Shrine Club in Worcester.

Mr. Hilton was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Retired State, County & Municipal Employees Association of Massachusetts. He was a member of Homer Wheaton Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Grafton Post, American Legion. He was a life member of Chapter 4, Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Hilton was active for many years in the Connie Mack and Tris Speaker Little Leagues. He became an Eagle Scout in Boy Scout Troop 16, and was a longtime Boy Scout and Cub Scout leader.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Zion Lutheran Church, 41 Whitmarsh Ave. The Rev. John Schultz will officiate. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours at Caswell-King Funeral Home, 474 Grove St., are 3:30 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow. Members of Franklin Lodge of Masons will meet there at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow to conduct a Masonic service. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions may be made instead to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 516 Carew St., Sringfield.
