John E. Lever, 90, of Shrewsbury died Feb 9th. He was born in Clinton June 12th 1916, the son of Clayton and Hazel (Card). He leaves a son Kenneth and his wife Beth of Grand Forks, ND and a daughter Ruth Courville of Shrewsbury. Also two step daughters, Lynda (Johnson) Camarra of Shrewsbury and Judith (Johnson) Ivel of Leicester, and three step sons, Ted Johnson, Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, Jeffrey Johnson, Palm Desert, CA, and Philip Johnson, Grafton, MA. He also leaves 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Robert C. Woodward, Millbridge, ME. He was preceded by his sister Beverly Lever of Shrewsbury. He was married to Elizabeth A (Cook) Lever who died in 1963, and to Helen Johnson (Smith) Lever who died in 1997.
After graduating from Beal High School in 1935, Mr. Lever worked for and became the manager of H.A. Cook & Son of Shrewsbury, a grower of carnations, and also worked for the Shrewsbury Water Department until his retirement. After retiring he and Helen lived in Palm Bay, Florida until the time of her death. He returned to Shrewsbury in 1998. Mr. Lever was a life member of the Green Mountain Club, a member of the New England Carnation Growers Association and the American Carnation Society. He was also a member of Wally Byam Caravan Society. An active outdoorsman, he enjoyed hiking, camping, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed woodworking, woodcarving, music (writing, playing and listening), painting, and traveling. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of the First Congregational Church of Shrewsbury on Thursday, Feb. 15th at 11AM. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
