James “Bud” Horgan, 91 of Worcester, loving husband, brother, father, grandfather and uncle, passed away on July 4, 2013. James is survived by his wife of 68 years, Shirley A. ( Haggerty) his children: a daughter, Maureen and her husband Thomas Salmon of Worcester; his three sons, Dr. James S. and his wife Barbara of Carol Stream, Ill; Michael F. and his wife Susan of Austin, TX; and, John J. Horgan of Worcester, MA. Also surviving is his younger brother, Francis “Frank” and his wife Gertrude Horgan of Auburn, MA; his 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. James was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Noone and Elizabeth (Betty) Scavone.
Mr. Horgan was a retired Shrewsbury High School where he taught mathematics for 36 years. Previously, he served as Worcester firefighter. James was a proud veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy as an aviator during both WWII and the Korean conflict. During WWII, he piloted several U.S. Naval carrier aircraft including the Corsair, returning to service during the Korean conflict to fly the U.S. Navy’s first functional carrier-based jet aircraft (F9F Panther) with tours of duty on three separate aircraft carriers. James will be sorely missed, but fondly remembered and much loved by all surviving family and friends.
Relatives and friend are invited to visit with James’ family on Monday, July 8th from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St. Shrewsbury, MA. A funeral Mass will immediately follow a 11 AM in St. Anne’s Church, 130 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury. Internment with Military Honors will be conducted in the Garden of Honor at Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Ave., Paxton, MA. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Anne’s Church in his name.
