Haroldyne M. "Deany" (Gonya) O'Brien, 86, of 80 Locust St., Worcester, died Saturday, August 21, 2010 after a long illness. Her husband of 56 years, Edward T. "Ned" O'Brien, died in 2002.
She leaves four sons, David T. O'Brien of Worcester, Edward T. O'Brien Jr., Richard P. O'Brien, both of Millbury, and Thomas A. O'Brien of Auburn; a brother, F. Peter Gonya of Grafton; a sister, Ann Stevenson of Longville, Minn.; 14 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces. Her brothers, Robert M. and Neil E. Gonya, and her sisters, Janice E. Kenney, Norma Smith and Beverly J. Sousa, predeceased her.
Haroldyne was born in Johnson, Vermont, daughter of Harold R. and Estelle M. (Marengo) Gonya. Her family moved to Worcester in 1927. She later lived in Shrewsbury for several years and graduated from Shrewsbury High School. She returned to Worcester in 1946.
Deany and Ned enjoyed their supper club for 20 years where they found some of their most cherished and enduring friendships. They also held great memories of their many years in their home in South Dennis on Cape Cod.
Deany was a member of St. Anne's Church, Shrewsbury, and a former longtime member of St. Margaret Mary Parish. She was an active member of the Worcester Police Wives Assn. for many years.
The funeral and burial at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton, will be private. There are no calling hours. The Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester, is directing arrangements.
