Gordon S. Newcomb, 81, of Bullard Street, died peacefully on Wednesday, October 17, 2012, under the loving care of his beloved wife, Marie and the caring staff at Knollwood Nursing Center in West Boylston. Born in Worcester, Gordon was the son of Roy J. and Flora V. (Dalpe) Newcomb.
Gordon graduated from Classical High School in 1950. After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served with the 7th Air Rescue Squadron during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1954. Returning home, Gordon followed his passion for the arts and enrolled at the School of Practical Arts, now the Art Institute of Boston. In 1957, he met the love of his life Marie L. Lucey of Worcester; they married in 1960, and later moved to Holden in 1962.
He was a gifted commercial artist and worked at the Worcester Telegram and Gazette from 1959 to 1995 as a Retail Advertising Layout Artist. He was a member of the Tower Hill Botanical Gardens and the Massachusetts Audubon Society. He and his wife traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada. Their favorite getaway destinations included the mountain ranges of Vermont and New Hampshire and especially the seacoast of Maine where they spent many a vacation.
Gordon had a deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors. He looked forward to experiencing the changing New England seasons and their offerings, and would spend the winter planning his spring and summer gardens. His other interests included photography, woodworking, painting, bird watching, hiking, snow shoeing and tending to his blueberry garden.
Besides his loving wife of 52 years, Marie L. (Lucey) Newcomb, he leaves a brother-in-law, James Lucey and his wife Janet of Worcester; a sister-in-law, Margaret Dudevoir and her husband Gerald of Rochester, MA; two nieces, Joanne Newcomb-Kinsman and her husband Joel of Peachtree City, Georgia and Carol Newcomb of Plattsburgh, NY; other extended family including nephews, nieces and cousins. He is predeceased by a brother, C. Kermit Newcomb.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Gordon’s family from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 22, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden followed by a procession to St. George Church, 40 Brattle St., Worcester where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Be Like Brit, P.O. Box 355, Rutland, MA 01543.
