Subscription Update Obituary

     Carl F. Carlson, 97, passed away at home on Wednesday, February 26, 2014. His wife of 63 years, Edith “Edie” Carlson, died in 2010. He was born in the Quinsigamond neighborhood of Worcester on October 4, 1916, son of Alice and Nils Carlson. He attended Worcester city schools and served in Company B of the 813th Tank Destroyer Battalion during WWII. Following the war, he worked for American Steel & Wire and US Steel. Carl was a long-time, active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He and his late wife Edie volunteered countless hours to worship, committees, and social groups at the church, as well as to the Lutheran Home of Worcester and Camp Calumet. Carl enjoyed scrollsaw woodworking, fishing, and vegetable gardening.

     He leaves a son and two daughters, Robert C. Carlson and his wife Franny Huberman of Monterey, MA, Linda DeBruin and her partner Diane Perotto of Worcester, and Lois Shillito of Yorktown Heights, NY. He leaves eight grandchildren, Jessica DeBruin and her husband John Lee, Daniel DeBruin and his wife Ellen, and Benjamin DeBruin and his partner Jake Fenske, all of Chicago; James Shillito and his wife Allison, Nils Shillito and his wife Jessica, and Carl Shillito, all of New York; and Jonah and Ella Carlson of Monterey. He leaves four great-grandchildren, Samantha and Matthew Lee of Chicago and Andrew and Holden Shillito of New York. He leaves many nieces and nephews and his best friend Norman Penny of Holden. Along with his beloved wife, he was predeceased by a son, Alan W. Carlson, and a brother, Nils E. Carlson.

     Calling hours will be held at Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln Street, Worcester, Sunday, March 2, from 1 to 3 PM. Immediately following the calling hours, a funeral service will be at 4 PM in Immanuel Lutheran Church, 346 Shrewsbury Street, Holden. Burial will be on Monday, March 3 at 11 AM in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue, Paxton. The funeral procession to the cemetery will leave Immanuel Lutheran Church at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial Fund, Immanuel Lutheran Church, 346 Shrewsbury Street, Holden MA 01520.
