Barbara A. (Brown) Dean, 74, of 26 Little Muggett Rd., passed away Monday, March 2, 2009 in St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester, with her family by her side. She fought a short and courageous battle with cancer. Her husband, Carl J.Dean, died in 1985.

She leaves behind three sons: Michael J. Dean and his wife Darlene of Brookfield, Robert J. Dean of Charlton, and James J. Dean and his wife CarolAnn of Herndon, VA; and eight grandchildren.

Barbara was born in Worcester, daughter of Frederick R. and Pearl C. (Paradise) Brown and lived in Charlton since 1960. She graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester. She also grew hydroponic tomatoes and was involved in the marketing and administration of the tomato business. Barbara was also with Carl Dean Associates, a consulting firm, and held a real estate license. She was a volunteer with the Rape Crisis program of Central Mass.

Barbara was a member and chairperson of the Charlton Board of Health, a member, secretary and chairperson for the Charlton Senior Center, a member of the Charlton Historical Society, and a member and vice president of the Helping Hand Society, and of course a member of the Red Hat Society.

Our mom really enjoyed going to the Senior Center, chatting with all her friends at lunch and going on occasional road trips. She enjoyed all the folks at Town Hall and participating on committees. She made many good friends in town who often referred to her as a "Classy Lady" who was always willing to listen. She will be missed by all who knew her.

We would like to say a special "thanks" to all the folks at St.Vincent Hospital for their tender care and support.

The funeral will be Friday, March 6, 2009 with a Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St. Joseph's Church, 10 H-Putnam Rd., Ext. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. Calling hours for Barbara will be Thursday, March 5, 2009 from 6 to 8 P.M. at the Robert J.Miller-Charlton Funeral Home, 175 Old Worcester Rd. The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be made to the charity of ones choice.
