Subscription Update Obituary

   Axel E. Carlson, 99, formerly of Worcester, died peacefully, Friday, March 6, 2009, at the Holden Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was predeceased by his wife of nearly 71 years, Clara D. (Peterson) Carlson in 2004; his sister, Linnea (Karlsson) Hammarlund of Hallstahammar, Sweden; cousins, Arlene (Carlson) Warg of Holden and Einar Carlson of Worcester; six of Clara's sisters, her brother, and all of their spouses; two of her nephews, and a grandnephew.

   Axel is survived by his daughter, Virginia L. Carlson of Holden; his niece and nephew, Ingrid (Hammerlund) Mellin and Borje Hammerlund both of Sweden, and their families; his cousin, Mrs. Carl (Edith Carlson) Carlson; his sister-in-law, Mrs. Carl (Edna) Lundin of Worcester; his many nieces and nephews through his marriage to Clara; and long-time family friends, Mrs. Dorothy Petralias of Worcester and Raymond and Francis (Petralias) Bitteker of Acton.

   Axel was born in Hallstahammar, Sweden on July 19, 1909 to Carl Axel and Hilma (Hellstrom) Karlsson. He was apprenticed as a tool and die maker at age 14 and came to America via Ellis Island in June 1928 at the age of 18. He lived with his uncle and jaunt, Carl and Marie Carlson for a year or two and worked for his uncle as a stone mason and plasterer. Axel ultimately found work in his trade at Norton Company, retiring after 40 years of service as a Foreman in Factory Services. He then found part-time work at R & A Machine Co. For the next 16 years, retiring at age 80.

   Axel was a member of Vasa Order (John Erickson Lodge), Guiding Lights Masonic Lodge and the Shriners (Aleppo Temple). He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church for 63 years. He was a former member of the property committee, participated on an ushering team, and a member of the former Men's Club at the church.

   A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, at Zion Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Memorial Fund at Zion Lutheran Church, 41 Whitmarsh Avenue, Worcester MA 01606.
