Ann T. Whalen peacefully passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She will always be remembered as a devoted and loving wife and mother.
Her husband of 46 years, John P. Whalen, died in 1998. He was the former longtime Holy Cross College baseball coach.
She leaves the John and Cindy Whalen family of Paxton, the Mary and Dr. Richard Calderon family of Natick, the Ann and Richard Tefft family of Brewster, the Margaret and Mark Brophy family of Barre, Christine Whalen of Worcester, Catherine Whalen of Worcester, the Mark and Chrissy Whalen family of Leicester, Timothy Whalen of Worcester and the Elizabeth and Mark Ceffalo family of Worcester. She leaves sixteen beautiful grandchildren. She, too, leaves her sister, Janice Richmond and her family of Lakeland, Florida, and her brother, Nick Cummings and his family of Deerfield Beach, Florida.
Our mother was a devout Catholic. Her love of Christ and the Blessed Mother imbued her with bountiful love and sublime grace which she shared with her family and friends. Unto death and now in the arms of God, she remains a true and faithful servant to the Cross and the credo.
The Whalen family, in Thanksgiving, wishes to acknowledge the people who cared for our mother and helped us to keep her safe and comfortable within the walls she papered and painted, near her pots and pans, and ever nestled within her story. To Linda Whitney, Barbara Minney, and Beverly Lewis, God bless the love you gave for years. To the visiting nurses and the hospice nurses, thank you for your kind and compassionate care. To the priests and brothers of St. Joseph’s Abbey, our sincere thanks for the friendship and prayers through all the years.
Calling hours are Friday, July 6 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral will be Saturday, July 7 from the funeral home with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Church, 931 Main St., Worcester. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to St. Peter’s Church, 931 Main St., Worcester 01610 or to St. Joseph’s Abbey, 167 North Spencer Road, Spencer 01562.
