Alice J. “June” (Banks) Popham Lazar, 98, of Worcester, passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at UMass Hospital in Worcester. She is reunited with her husband, Frank Lazar, who predeceased her in May 2004, and with her first husband, Robert F. Popham, who predeceased her in 1971.
June, as she was more commonly known, is survived by her son Robert J. Popham of Bend, Oregon; her daughter and primary caregiver, Pamela Moschilli of Worcester; two grandchildren, Kelly Everhart of French Glen, OR, and Robert V. Popham of Hines, OR; three great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. June was predeceased by four sisters, Ruth Ferrantino, Gert Berglund, Pearl Curran, and Barbara Costello. Born in Worcester, daughter of the late, Frederick and Blanche E. (Gaulin) Banks, she has lived here all her life.
June worked for many years as a sales associate for R.H. White Department Store in Worcester. She was a member of the former Saint Charles Borromeo Church and most recently had been attending Mass at Saint John’s Church. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crochet, and crafting. She was a wonderful cook and baker, it is said that she made the world’s best apple pies, chocolate chip cookies, and brownies.
June enjoyed family time and spending summers at the family camp on Lake Quaboag in East Brookfield or on the beaches of Old Orchard, Maine and West Dennis on Cape Cod.
Calling Hours will be on Wednesday morning, January 4, from 9 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. Her Funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. in Saint John’s Church, 44 Temple Street, Worcester. Interment will be in Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton.
