Alfonso “Al” Prego, 92, of Northbridge and formerly of Worcester, passed peacefully on Monday, March 3, 2014. Born in the north end of Boston, he was the son of the late Indalecio and Amable (Rio) Prego.

Al is survived by his sisters, Dolores Cote of Northbridge and Rose Cote of Dracut; two brothers, Ralph “Benny” and his wife Charlotte Lazaro of Pahrump, NV and Timothy and his wife Rebecca Lazaro of Martinsburg, WV; a sister-in-law, Gloria Lazaro of Oxford; and three generations of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Santia (Saez) Prego, and two brothers, Joseph and James.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy having proudly served on the USS North Carolina. Following the war, he also served a term with the Merchant Marines then returned home to work for many years at the Standard Foundry Company of Worcester. Upon retirement, he and his wife moved to Deltona, Florida where they lived for more than 20 years, returning to this area in 2008. He was a parishioner of St. Catherine of Sweden Church in Worcester and Our Lady of the Lake in Deltona.

Al was a devoted husband, a gentle and kind soul who deeply touched the lives of those who knew and loved him. He was a great storyteller and conversationalist and enjoyed trips to the beach, camping in York, Maine, long chats and singing with his wife and those whom he loved. Al will be greatly missed.

The family wishes to sincerely thank the Salmon Hospice Team and the many caregivers of the Beaumont Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Northbridge for the compassionate care they’ve lovingly given to Al during the 5 ½ years he resided there.

All are invited to gather with Al’s family on Saturday, March 8, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. George Church, 40 Brattle St., Worcester. He will be laid to rest in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Ave., Paxton. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Salmon Beaumont Peace Team, c/o Nicole Croteau, 85 Beaumont Drive, Northbridge, MA 01534.
