Sigmond J. “Ziggy” Barnard, 83, of Carron Lane, died Thursday, July 6, 2006, in Hubbard Regional Hospital, Webster. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eileen M. (Leveille) Barnard of Oxford; his brother-in-law, Jack Leveille of Turners Falls; and six nieces and nephews, Mary Jean Nugent of Sterling, Ann Marie Bukoski of Worcester, Terry Clouatre of Sturbridge, John Leveille of Northboro, Jim Leveille of Easthampton, and Carol Leveille of Randolph. He was predeceased by four sisters, Helen, Jane, Mary, and Beatrice. Mr. Barnard was born in Templeton, the son of the late Joseph and Cecilia (Celinski) Berzinski, and had lived in Oxford since 1957. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving as sergeant.
Mr. Barnard worked at Worcester Gas Light Co. in Worcester for 45 years, retiring over 20 years ago. In 1984, he was named assistant animal control officer in Oxford and soon became the animal control director, retiring on April 6, 2006. He was a member of the Founder’s Day Committee in Oxford and was Grand Marshall of the Founder’s Day parade in 1997. He was a member of the Oxford 275th Anniversary Committee, a member of the Main Street Preservation Committee, and was an election constable. June 6, 2006, was dedicated Sigmond J. Barnard day in Oxford.
