Subscription Update Obituary

     Schuyler “Sky” M. Fredrikson, 88, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at Knollwood Nursing Center after a brief illness. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Holden, the son of Arvid and Elsie (Nelson) Fredrikson and graduated from Wachusett Regional High School.

Sky’s loving wife of 52 years, Madeline B. (Caffarelli) Cove Fredrikson, passed away on January 17, 2015. He leaves two sons, Michael Cove and his wife, Roberta of Winter Haven, FL and John Fredrikson and his wife, Regina of Londonderry, NH; five daughters, Maureen G. Samra and her husband, Roy of Shrewsbury, Jane Butkevich and her husband, Paul of Sterling, Debra Foxworthy and her husband, James of Scottsdale, AZ, Margaret Foley and her husband, Stephen of Webster and Carol Tate and her husband, Van Emond of Whitinsville; a sister, Ann Bjorklund of Brookville, FL; twenty grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. He was predeceased by a sister, Donna Skrapka and a great-grandson, Bryan Rossik.

Sky was a 3rd Class Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served aboard the Battleship USS Missouri BB 63 and witnessed a Kamikaze attack in April 1945 and the signing of the formal surrender of the Japanese Forces to the Allied Powers in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. He was a tool and die maker for Reed Rolled Thread in Holden for 27 years before retiring in 1988 and worked as a painter and wall-paper hanger throughout his life. After retirement, he worked at Barbers Crossing in Worcester for another 20 years.

Sky was a charter member and original plank owner USS Missouri BB 63 Association, a member of the Harold N. Keith American Legion Post 204, the West Boylston VFW post 6907, was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and was past commander of the Holden VFW. He was a founding member and past president twice of the 611 Social Club in Worcester and a member of Hillcrest and Bedrock Country Clubs. Sky was a proud and patriotic veteran who participated and sometimes led the West Boylston Memorial Day Parade. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, especially to USS Missouri reunions and loved to spend time with his large extended family. He will be sadly missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family on Wednesday, May 6, from 11:30 to 1 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. Burial will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. Please omit flowers. Memorial contributions may be made in Sky’s name to the USS Missouri Memorial Association, P.O. Box 879, Aiea, HI 96701.
