Subscription Update Obituary

Mary E. (Sawtell) Smith, 89, of Northbridge and formerly of Worcester, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Saturday, September 2, 2023 in her daughter’s home.

Mary was married to the late Raymond C. Smith and is survived by 4 daughters, Edith Fletcher of Northbridge, Mary Holbrook of Northbridge, Agnes Smith of Worcester and Laura Smith of Worcester; 4 sons, Donald Sawtell of Atlanta, GA, Raymond Smith Jr. of Maryland, Richard Smith of Ohio, Joseph Smith of Worcester and David Smith of Middletown, CT; 28 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.

Mary was born in Bouton Landing, NY daughter of the late Paul Sawtell Sr. and Yolanda Sawtell and is also predeceased by two sons, Daniel and Joseph Smith; a brother Paul Sawtell and three sisters, Marion, Blanche and Sandy.

Mary worked for many years as a school crossing guard for the City of Worcester and loved seeing the students every day while she was at Canterbury Street School. She loved taking her day trips to Foxwoods with family to take her chances at Bingo and was an avid sports fan, she especially loved to watch the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots.

A private graveside service will be held in the Worcester County Memorial Park 217 Richards Ave. Paxton. Memorial contributions in memory of Mary may be made to Boys and Girls Club of Worcester “Kids Café Program” 65 Boys & Girls Club Way Worcester, MA 01610.
