John Charleston, Sr., 79, of Worcester passed away on Sunday, November 12, 2023, in UMass Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer and declining health.

He leaves his wife and best friend of 59 years, Nancy A. (Hazzard) Charleston, a son John Charleston, Jr. and his wife Laurie, two daughters Darlene and Kelly Charleston, two granddaughters Tiffany Charleston and Janisa Bynum, two great grandchildren Kalianna and Kayden, many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

John was born in Helena, Arkansas, son of Willie and Rosa (Scott) Charleston.  John proudly served in the United States Army and later enlisted in the Army National Guard serving as a sergeant.  He worked for the City of Worcester for many years, as a truck driver for the DPW and as a bus driver for the W.R.T.A before retiring.  He was a member of the Yankee Division Veterans Association.

John enjoyed his daily trips to Boski’s Market to play the lottery and scratch tickets. He loved to travel to Las Vegas and Atlantic City with Nancy.  He enjoyed fishing and was an avid New England Patriots fan.  He never complained about anything and was a quiet man whos’ silence spoke volumes.  He enjoyed his weekly card games with his friends, but his greatest joy was his family which he loved and adored.  He had a special bond with granddaughter Janisa, “Papa” was truly instrumental in her life.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. The family would like to thank Dr. Korapati and Samantha Reeves, NP and the UMass oncology team for all the care and concern that was extended to John and his family.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 19 from 1:00-3:00 PM in Callahan, Fay and Caswell Life Celebration Home, 61 Myrtle Street, Worcester.  Burial will be private at John’s request in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.  In Lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the American Heart Association, 93 Worcester Street, Wellesley, MA 02481.
