Dr. D. Geraldine “Gerry” Guertin died peacefully at home on Sept. 11, 2016. She was born in Southbridge, MA on March 8, 1927, the daughter of the late D. Theodore Guertin and Helen (Nash) Guertin.

She is survived by her sister, C. Patricia O’Keefe; her sisters-in-law, Julie Guertin and Lore Guertin; and many loving nieces and nephews and their families. Gerry is predeceased by her brothers Theodore Guertin and Donald Guertin.

Gerry was educated in Worcester public schools, graduating from Classical High School. She graduated from Worcester State Teachers College in 1948 and began her career in education. Her initial teaching post was in the Sutton, MA elementary schools. In the mid-1950’s, she embarked on a new adventure and taught U.S. Air Force dependent children in Japan, England and Germany. This was one of the highlights of her career. Upon her return, she obtained her M.A. Ed. from Clark University and became a guidance counselor and coach at Wachusett Regional High School in Holden, MA. Gerry earned her Ed.D. from Clark University in 1975 and accepted a position on the faculty of Framingham State College, where she remained until her retirement.

Gerry was known as an avid sports fan and a fiercely competitive golfer. She spent many enjoyable summers golfing at Holden Hills Country Club and with the WGAM. She is proud to have scored more than one hole-in-one in her time.

“Aunt Gerry” was the quintessential fun aunt. She brought laughter and entertainment everywhere she went. She was a true trailblazer –a woman ahead of her time. Gerry was fiercely independent, passionate about education, and a champion for anyone in need. She generously gave of her time and talents and encouraged everyone’s dreams. She will be deeply missed.

The funeral will be held Saturday, September 17, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant St., Worcester. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park. There are no calling hours.

The family asks that flowers be omitted but suggests that donations may be made in Gerry’s memory to Camp Putnam, 141 Rutherford Road, New Braintree, MA 01531.

The Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester, is directing arrangements.
