Subscription Update Obituary

Barbara Ann Spence departed this earth on Wednesday, June 8th at the age of 89. She was born in Brooklyn, NY the daughter of the late Charles Dupont and Nancy Dupont-Heywood. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her two sons, William and Gary Spence; granddaughter, Mercedes Leanna; and sister, Carol Smith. She leaves two cousins, Hazel and Ronald with whom she was very close; her son William’s companion, Charlene Mays; two granddaughters, Monique Spence, and Nicole Smith; six great-grandchildren; former daughter-in-law, Debra Spence; and many cousins and friends.

Dr. Barbara Spence was a Professor and Chair of the Human Service Division at Quinsigamond Community College where she facilitated Social Science classes. She received her undergraduate Liberal Arts Degree from Assumption College, her Master’s Degree from Worcester States College, a Certificate of Advance Graduate Studies Teacher and a Doctrine Degree from UMass. She also worked as Director of Admissions at the former St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing. She held many memberships in a variety of organizations and had served on councils and boards in her community, the state, the region, and the nation. Dr. Spence was a consultant to schools, social agencies and state agencies as well as the Worcester Police Department. Dr. Spence was a recipient of numerous awards from a variety of organizations; the award she was most proud of is the Carter G. Woodson Award, presented to her by the National Education Association.

Dr. Spence was committed to her faith and was a member of St. Peter’s Parish where she served on the Parish Council, and the Parish Finance Committee. She was also a leader in the African American Community.
The family would like to thank the Lutheran Home and Tatnuck Park for their hard work, compassion, and excellent care Barbara received.

Dr. Spence’s funeral is Tuesday, June 14th with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Peter’s Church, 929 Main Street. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. A visitation will be held from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. in the church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Church, 931 Main Street, Worcester, MA 01610. O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue is assisting the family with arrangements.
