Edward F. Fitzgerald, 59, of 194 Cohasset St. was stricken and died Monday on Checkerberry Island in Webster, where he was spending the summer.

Mr. Fitzgerald was a clerk in the city's Water Department seven years, and worked nights in the mailing room of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He was a member of Chester P. Tuttle American Legion Post in Auburn and the Worcester Civitan Club.

He leaves his wife, Kathleen A. (Griffin) Fitzgerald; four sons, Michael T. and Matthew L. Fitzgerald of Worcester, John E. Fitzgerald of Natick, and Edward F. Fitzgerald Jr. of Beverly; brothers and sisters in Connecticut; and three grandchildren.

He was born in Waterbury, Conn., a son of Michael and Helen (O'Brien) Fitzgerald, and lived in Worcester 22 years.
