Edwin A. Smith, 94, formerly of Purchase St., died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006, at the Christopher House. His wife, Mary C. (Crimmins) Smith, died in 1997. He leaves a son, Richard P. Smith of Worcester; nephews and nieces. His sister, Rose Delaney Stradley, and his brother, John Smith, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of John and Mary (Sadler) Smith and lived in Worcester most of his life. He graduated from Commerce High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving with the 8th Air Force 447 Bomb Group, which completed 258 combat missions. He played a part in taking over and rebuilding an English air base near London to accommodate our largest bombers, B-17s. He worked at Reed Rolled Thread Co. for 25 years, retiring in 1977. Previously, he was a merchant marine and worked aboard ships that traveled across the Atlantic through the Mediterranean Sea, the Suez Canal, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. He was a receiver and a kicker on semi-pro football teams in Worcester. He had a reputation for being a good handicapper of thoroughbred horses, and an excellent cribbage player, winning many cribbage tournaments. He was an avid golfer and scored a hole-in-one at Green Hill Golf Course. Calling hours at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester, are Tuesday, Sept. 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 13 from the funeral home with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 25 Fales St., Worcester. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. |
