LEO MAKI – 84                   [Tuesday, June 24, 1997]

West Boylston – Leo Maki, 84, of 17 Newton Street, died yesterday at home after a short illness.  He leaves his wife of 59 years, Alberta {Nowak} Maki; two daughters, Judith B Sandberg and Joanne K. Ciesluk, both of Holden; a brother, Simo F. Maki of Hartwood, VA.; two sisters, Lea Oehme of Central Valley, NY, and Laila Munson of Barnstable; two granddaughters, Diane Rowe of Cary, NC and Leslie Walton of Holden; and two great-granddaughters, Jennifer and Elizabeth Rowe of Cary, NC.

He was born in Salt Lake City, UT, son of Otto and Tyyne [Holm] Maki, and lived in Princeton before moving to West Boylston in 1936.

Mr. Maki was a Production Foreman at Norton Company in Worcester for 35 years and was responsible for, among other things, the establishment of a plant in Brazil.  He retired in 1975.  In retirement, he was custodian at Beaman Memorial Library from 1985 until April of this year.  He was a 50-year member of the Boylston Lodge of Masons.  He was also a member of the Quinapoxet Model Flying Club, Norton 25 Year Club, and the Greendale Retired Men's Club and it's golf league.

An accomplished saxaphone and clarinet player, he was a member of several area bands.  He was a licensed pilot and woodworker, specializing in doll houses and miniature furniture.

The funeral service will be 2 p.m. tomorrow in Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.  Private burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.  The calling hour is 1 to 2 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of the Beaman Memorial Library, 8 Newton Street, West Boylston, MA 01583, or to Oakdale Methodist Church, 15 North Main Street, West Boylston, MA 01583.
