Subscription Update Obituary

     Shirley Ann (Quinn) Platts, 75, passed away March 12, 2014 at UMASS Memorial Hospital after a brief illness surrounded by family and friends. Her work was done and she went home to live with God. Born in Worcester, daughter of Harold J. Quinn Sr. and Ora V. (Laveillee) Quinn, she graduated from North High School and also from Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Assumption College. She was Director of Nursing Services at several area nursing homes, in particular Charstelle (St. Mary’s) Nursing Home and Odd Fellows Home for many years. She obtained a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Clark University and a Masters Degree in Public Health from Worcester State College. She was also a Nursing Home Administrator for many years. She valued education and advocated for others to pursue further education as well.

     She leaves her beloved companion Barbara E. Garbarczyk, with whom she lived. She also leaves two step-daughters, Susan and her husband Thomas Wade and Sandra and her husband John Powers, all of Worcester and their children and grandchildren. She leaves her sister-in-law Maureen Quinn (wife of brother William) of Apache Junction, AZ as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Thomas R. Platts Jr. in 2005. She is now smiling as she joins him after 8 long years. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Harold J. Quinn Jr. and William A. Quinn.

     Those who knew her will remember her zest for living and her love of traveling, especially to the trailer in Rhode Island which was near her favorite ocean beach. She was also an avid gardener. She served as a Mentor to many individuals too numerous to name who will grieve her passing as well as her many friends. She was a parishioner of St. Peter’s Church in Worcester.

     A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Main St. Worcester. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park. There are no calling hours per her wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory to UMMF Breast Cancer Clinical Research may be mailed to UMass Medicine Development Office 333 South St Shrewsbury,Ma. 01545 CASWELL-KING FUNERAL HOME 474 Grove St. Worcester is directing arrangements.
