Subscription Update Obituary

     Irene E. (Martel) Johnson, 89, formerly of Green Hill Towers, died on Sunday, March 16, 2014 at Hammersmith House in Saugus, MA. Her husband Walter R. Johnson, died March 30, 1984. She leaves seven children, Carleen D. Stickney and her husband Larry of Alexandria, NH, Carl R. Sawyer and his wife Mary-Jane of Saco, ME, Walter J. Johnson of San Diego, CA, Rinda B. Ciaccio and her husband Paul of Bristol, RI, Arthur E. Johnson and his wife Cheryl of Worcester, Alton W. Drake and his wife Carole of Atlantic Heights, NJ, Michelle M. Carvajal and her husband Marco of Chelsea, MA, two brothers, Adrian Martel of Sanford, ME, Joseph Martel of Salem, MA; 17 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. A step-son, Norman E. Johnson, another son, Bernard C. Sawyer, a brother, George Martel, and two sisters, Margerite Savoie and Doris Boisvert, all predeceased her.

     She was born and raised in Sanford, Maine, daughter of the late Joseph G. and Mary E. (Cote) Martel and lived in Worcester most of her life. She was a long time member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Homer J. Wheaton VFW Post and a former member of St. Bernard’s Church.

     Irene was a Certified Nursing Assistant working at Memorial Hospital for many years until retiring in 1990. She had also been a volunteer worker for the Age Center of Worcester and volunteered for the Democratic Party.

     A CALLING HOUR will be held from 10 to 11 A.M. on FRIDAY, MARCH 28, in KELLY FUNERAL HOME, 154 Lincoln St., followed by a FUNERAL SERVICE at 11 A.M. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton, MA.
