Subscription Update Obituary

     Mrs. Dorothy R. (Szczurko) Tufano, 96, formerly of Worcester passed on March 22, 2014.

     She was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on February 6, 1918, a daughter of the late Jacob and Cecelia (Maziopa) Szczurko. Loving wife to the late Orlando J. Tufano, who passed November 26, 1998.

     Dorothy’s career spanned a forty year period. She began her career as a weapons and ammunitions inspector with the Army Ordinance Division of the U.S. War Dept during the Korean War. After the war she worked at Worcester County National Bank in the auditing and accounting department.

     She attended Our Lady of Mercy for two years and spent a year at Holy Cross College graduating with her teacher’s certification. She taught religion at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel- St. Ann Parish before moving to Oregon where she taught Bible History and Religion at St Mary’s High School. She became school co-ordinator and director of religious education for Sacred Heart Parish until her retirement in 1980.

     While in Oregon she attended Southern Oregon State College for two years and became licensed to prepare income taxes and perform accounting services for small businesses. Dorothy returned to Worcester where she was employed at Albin R. Glavickas CPA firm.

     Her memberships included Catholic Daughters of America, the Sons of Italy, No. 168, the National Retired Teachers Association, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel- St. Ann Church Guild, where she served as its first president.

     Dorothy is survived by her three sons, John and his wife Sharon of Indianapolis, Indiana, Gerard of Port Richie, Florida, James and his wife Valorie of Tipp City, Ohio, and a daughter-in-law Julia Tufano of Worcester. She is also survived by grandchildren and great grandchildren, two sisters, Mary M. Muir and Theresa C. Scarrci both of Florida; and two brothers, Frank J. Szczurko of Arizona and Daniel J. Szczurko of Florida.

     Dorothy was pre-deceased by her son, Joseph, sister, Helen S. Evanowski, and brother, Alfred J. Simmons.

     Her funeral will be held on Friday, March 28th from FAZIO FUNERAL HOME, 9 Branch St in Worcester. A funeral mass will follow at 10:00a.m. at Our Lady of Mt Carmel – St Ann Church. Interment will be in Worcester County Memorial Park Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Thursday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. Funeral arrangements under the direction of Louis M. Fazio Jr. and Louis M. Fazio III.
